PRINT DESIGN / CLASSROOM PROJECT

This was a part of designing a brochure experience using paper folds. The topic I chose was the Apollo 11 moon landing. As the brochure would unfold, the moon landing time line would also unfold, so if you’re on the first page, you’re looking at the moon at a distance, and as you unfold, you start going towards the moon and finally on the last fold, you land on it.

This brochure was designed to honour the historical moment of first moon landings and hence the title, “the eagle has landed”. The “eagle” is the code name for the lunar module, which was to land on the moon.

The unfolding process of the brochure is shown here. With each unfolding level, the space craft gets closer to the moon, until in the last full page spread, it lands on the moon. The copy in the brochure was also selected carefully to enhance the experience and give the feel of how the atmosphere would be during the moon landing.

The text and the images were composed in such a way that the essence of space is captured. The perspective of moon and earth and the emptiness of the space was tried to be captured in the folding through composition and copy. For eg., In the second fold, where the earth is seen, the copy talks about how Neil Armstrong covered the earth with his thumb and shut one eye, but felt “very, very small”.

The first picture shows the front and back of the brochure, and the second talks about how Neil Armstrong felt when he looked at earth in the orbit of the moon. The third picture contains the exact radio conversation between the pilots and the Command centre as they are landing on the surface of the moon. Notice the lunar module landing on the surface of the moon. The final picture is the brochure fully unfolded, it talks about the event and how it inspired millions of people around the globe.
